Why Can One Image Be So Much Larger Than Another?⌄
Two images can look almost identical on screen and still have very different file sizes. Pixel dimensions matter, but they are not the whole story. The file format, compression level, transparency, camera metadata and the amount of fine detail in the picture all affect how many kilobytes or megabytes the final file needs.
A modern phone can save a single photo with millions of pixels, even when that photo will eventually appear as a much smaller image on a website, profile page or product listing. Keeping the full original is useful for editing or printing, but it is often more than you need for an everyday upload.
JPG, PNG and WebP behave differently too. JPG usually works well for photographs and smooth color changes. PNG is useful when you need transparency or very crisp graphic edges, but a photographic PNG can become surprisingly large. WebP often gives a smaller web-ready file, although some websites still ask specifically for JPG or PNG.
Simply dragging the quality slider down is not always the best way to make an image smaller. Sometimes a modest quality change is enough. A strict target such as 50 KB may need a more careful search for the best setting. In harder cases, slightly reducing the pixel dimensions can save far more space than pushing the image into extremely low quality.
You stay in control: keep the original dimensions, set a size target, choose another output format, or let Smart Resize step in only when it is actually needed.
Do not expect every image to shrink by the same amount. A large camera photo may drop a lot, while an already optimized WebP may barely change. If the original is already efficient, keeping it can be better than creating another file just to say that compression happened.

How to Make an Image Smaller Without Overdoing It⌄
- Start with Balanced compression when you are not sure which level to choose.
- Use a target size when a website gives you a hard limit such as 100 KB instead of repeatedly trying random settings.
- Keep the original dimensions when detail matters and enable Smart Resize only when the file-size goal is more important.
- For photographs, JPG or WebP will usually use space more efficiently than PNG.
- Keep PNG or WebP when you need transparency around a logo, icon or graphic.
- If the image is already below your target size, there is usually no reason to recompress it.
- Look closely at faces, small lettering, sharp edges and gradients after strong compression because quality loss is easier to notice there.
- Reduce metadata when you only need a lighter sharing copy, but keep the original if camera or editing information matters.
- For print-ready, CMYK or high-bit-depth source images, keep the original and avoid extreme compression until you have checked the finished colors.
- For a very large batch, keep the browser tab open until the job and the final ZIP have finished.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I compress an image to exactly 50 KB or 100 KB?⌄
You can set 50 KB, 100 KB or another custom target and Voymira will work toward that limit while trying to keep the clearest result it can. Some images can reach the target through compression alone, while a very tight limit may need Smart Resize. If the original is already smaller than your target, there is no need to recompress it.
Will compressing an image change its width and height?⌄
Not by default. Normal compression keeps the original pixel dimensions. Dimensions change only if you set a maximum long edge or allow Smart Resize to reduce them when a strict target cannot be reached reasonably with compression alone.
Which is better for a smaller file: JPG, PNG or WebP?⌄
It depends on the image. JPG usually works well for photographs. PNG is useful for transparency, logos and crisp graphics but can be much larger for photos. WebP often gives a good balance between quality and file size for web use. If a website requires a specific format, use the format it accepts rather than chasing the smallest possible number.
Does PNG transparency stay after compression?⌄
Yes when the output remains PNG, and WebP can preserve transparency as well. If you deliberately convert a transparent image to JPG, JPG does not support transparency, so those areas need a solid background.
Why did my image barely get smaller after compression?⌄
It may already be efficiently encoded, or the selected quality setting may leave little room for further reduction without visible damage. Changing format can sometimes help, and very large pixel dimensions can also be reduced when that suits your use. Voymira avoids replacing an efficient original with a larger result.
How many images can I compress at once?⌄
Voymira does not use a fixed image-count limit in the compressor. Images are processed progressively instead of keeping every decoded image in memory at once. The practical limit still depends on total file size, image dimensions, browser storage and the memory available on your phone or computer.
